Management protocols for the shift-age
THE TRADITIONAL ORGANIZATON
Industrial age organizations operate using a chain of command structure. The responsibility of the traditional supervisor is to provide direction and be the primary source of information for direct reports. |
THE PROCESS DISCIPLINED ORGANIZATION
In a process autocracy, direction is provided by a documented “task process”. A task process identifies a sequenced checklist of activities and key measurements for each assignment. |
Every manager with direct reports (all levels–including the CEO) should comply to a standardized supervisory process
In a process-disciplined organization, the supervisor’s role transfers from being a source of information and direction to:
- recognizing positive results
- ensuring that each task process (checklist) is carried out to specification
- establishing and monitoring individual goals
- coaching to ensure that performance objectives will be met
- enhelping direct reports eliminate waste and rework.
A supervisory process example.
- Maintains a current record of all task processes assigned to each of his/her direct reports.
- Ensures that each direct report has a copy of their assigned task processes.
- Ensures that each direct report has a complete understanding of responsibilities spelled out in their assigned task processes.
- Establishes performance targets based on measures identified in each task process.
- Facilitates team meetings at a regular interval to collectively inform, inspire, and problem solve. A meeting agenda is prepared in advance and minutes are recorded.
- Conducts a recurring monthly 1:1 coaching session with each direct report to: review personal and group performance, and set priorities.
