TEAMWORK AND BREAKTHROUGHS
![]() Breakthrough
An inordinate amount of meeting time is spent solving problems. Even so, many organizations experience the ‘recurring issue’ syndrome. Resources get poured into trying to solve what turns out to a symptom, not the root cause. This frustration confronts decision-makers all the time. The answer is not working harder at doing more of the same, but to breakthrough to a new way of thinking. The following process has the power to solve real problems—not just put out recurring fires. “Our thinking has created problems which cannot be solved by that same level of thinking.” -Albert Einstein Einstein’s quote reflects a familiar four act drama:
There are two primary causes for failure:

The Breakthrough:…provides a clear sense of passing through an ‘almost tangible mental boundary’. It’s like tearing yourself out of a giant paper bag. The bag is your present way of thinking—representing your belief in; certain limits, the predictability of a given set of circumstances, or a mental rut in the way you’ve been approaching the problem. Mental ruts are major contributors to feelings of ‘stuckness’. A breakthrough is a profound shift in the way those involved have ‘held’ or viewed a problem—a mindset transition that has created space for something fresh to happen. Typically, breakthroughs address a ‘problem’ at different levels than what was presented initially. Breakthrough solutions are always accompanied by an energy surge released that flows through and from the people involved. They also foster a high level of confidence in the ultimate success of a decision. Ironically, organizations often resist the very breakthrough they are seeking—“better the demon we know than the one we don’tknow”.by LSI Contributor Dr. John J. Scherer
